As part of Photo Month (from August 23 to October 11, 2015), the Maison des Arts et de la Culture de Brompton presented the exhibition Souvenirs vivants (Living Memories) showing the works of interdisciplinary artist Kate Morrison (series Transposition – Territory Of Grief). Through the biais of individual and collective souvenirs, Kate speaks of a human adventure, the cycle and hardships of life. Nostalgia, resilience, loss and recovery are some of the underlying themes (approached) in her installations and several photographic works, sometimes tragic, sometimes hopeful, but always imprinted with surprising sensitivity.

 

Kate Morrison presents her solo exhibition entitled ''Transposition - Territory Of Grief''

The artist proposes a photographic narrative of a biographical stroll. In this installation, the object souvenirs serve to support the difficult, but universal themes that are grief and resilience. It is evident, that life is transformed by the trial of grief.  But the artist reminds us that from destruction succeeds regeneration.In this way Transpositiontakes place.

 

Artistic Approach

It took twelve years for the idea of this visual creation to take seed.  Kate Morrison proposes here the result of a two phase journey : first of all the rediscovery of her images taken on the site of an explosion where she lost both her parents, then the digitization of those images and the artistic creative process for which she invented what she calls cartographic writing. As for lyrics that follow the notes of a music staff in a song, her writing on photographs outlines a cartographic path, weaving the ties between image and emotion. Because writing – in French or English, language from here or from her native British Columbia – permeates her territory of grief. This new approach creates a transposition between then and now. In their new vocation as things, the memorable objects serve to support the artist’s work. In spite of the tragedy, it is optimism that is at the origin of her work. Thus transposition infiltrates (seeps into) all of the components of her creations.

 

Biography

It is in 1983 that Kate Morrison takes root in Quebec where she persues her studies in music, the arts and religion at Bishop’s University. Her search for polyvalency and her desire to open up to other forms of expression, notebly multimedia arts, led to her postgraduate studies in contemporary art (DPAA). A diploma she completed in 2013 at the University of Sherbrooke. Whether it is as a professional singer-songwriter or as an interdisciplinary artist, Kate Morrison approaches life and her art with poetry, humour, hope and commitment. It can be heard in her songs, it can be seen in her visual creations.

Dans le cadre du Mois de la photo (du 23 août au 11 octobre 2015), la Maison des Arts et de la Culture de Brompton a présenté l'exposition Souvenirs vivants présentant les œuvres de l'artiste interdisciplinaire Kate Morrison (série Transposition – Territory Of Grief) . Par le biais de souvenirs individuels et collectifs, Kate parle d'une aventure humaine, du cycle et des épreuves de la vie. Nostalgie, résilience, perte et récupération sont quelques-uns des thèmes sous-jacents (abordés) dans ses installations et plusieurs œuvres photographiques, parfois tragiques, parfois pleines d'espoir, mais toujours empreintes d'une sensibilité surprenante.

 

Kate Morrison présente son exposition solo intitulée "Transposition – Territoire du deuil".

L’artiste propose le récit photographique d’une marche biographique. Dans cette installation, des objets souvenirs servent à aborder les thèmes difficiles, mais universels, que sont le deuil et la résilience. C’est une évidence, la vie est transformée par l’épreuve du deuil. Mais, l’artiste rappelle qu’à la destruction succède la régénération. Ainsi s’opère la Transposition.

 

Démarche artistique

Il aura fallu douze ans pour que l’idée de cette création visuelle commence à germer. Kate Morrison propose ici le résultat d’un parcours en deux temps : d’abord la redécouverte de ses images du lieu de l’explosion, dans laquelle ont péri ses parents, ensuite la numérisation puis la création artistique pour laquelle elle invente ce qu’elle appelle écriture cartographique. Comme pour les paroles qui suivent le chemin de la portée dans une chanson, son écriture sur les photographies dessine un trajet cartographique, tissant des liens entre l’image et les affects. Car l’écriture – en français et en anglais, langues d’ici et de sa Colombie-Britannique natale – imprègne le territoire du deuil. Cette nouvelle approche crée une transposition entre jadis et maintenant. Dans leur nouvelle vocation de choses, les objets-souvenirs servent d’appui à l’artiste. Malgré la tragédie, c’est l’optimisme qui est à l’origine de son travail.Ainsi la transposition infiltre toutes les composantes de son œuvre. 

Biographie

C’est en 1983 que Kate Morrison prend racine au Québec où elle poursuit des études en musique, arts et religion à l’Université Bishops. Sa recherche de polyvalence et son désir de s’ouvrir à d’autres formes d’expression, notamment à l’art multimédia, l’ont conduite vers des études de 2^ecycle en art actuel (DPAA). Études qu’elle a complétées en 2013 à l’Université de Sherbrooke. Que ce soit à titre d’auteure-compositeure-interprète professionnelle ou d’artiste interdisciplinaire, Kate Morrison aborde la vie et ses œuvres avec poésie, humour, espoir et engagement. Cela s’entend dans ses chansons, cela se voit dans ses créations visuelles.
